5 Ways To Extend The Life Of Old Electronic Devices

Many people use old electronic devices for sentimental reasons or as collector’s items. These devices could include old game consoles (I collect these), answering machines, vintage cameras, or radios. Properly storing these electronic items is crucial, as they can experience wear and tear over time.

Environmental factors such as dust and humidity can accelerate this deterioration, leading to a loss of functionality and value. To ensure the longevity of these devices, it’s important to follow the five tips outlined below, which will help maintain their working condition for years to come.

    Store in a climate-controlled environment

Sheds, uninsulated attics, and basic storage units can be some of the worst places to store old electronics. Exposure to extreme temperatures and excessive humidity levels can cause electronic parts to melt, contract, or corrode. Keeping devices in a space where you can control the temperature and humidity is much safer. An insulated room in your home with HVAC could be the perfect environment.

Alternatively, you can look into climate controlled self storage near you – these are self storage units with heating and humidity controls.

    Avoid exposure to dust

Dust is renowned for causing electronic devices to overheat. Control dust levels in the air to ensure that your devices aren’t collecting dust. Ventilating rooms by opening windows and using HVAC can reduce dust levels.

If dust levels persist, consider buying an air purifier to keep in the room with your electronics in order to stop dust getting to them.

    Keep within boxes and cases

It’s advisable to store electronic devices in specialized cases or boxes to safeguard them from dust. For instance, dedicated cases are available for various devices such as gaming consoles, cameras, portable music players, phones, and electronic musical instruments. While these cases may have a price tag, they offer tailored protection.

Additionally, some enthusiasts prefer to retain their devices’ original packaging and store them in the original boxes to maintain their pristine condition. This practice shields the devices from dust and guards against accidental impacts, mold formation, and pest infestations. Ultimately, employing boxes and cases is an effective measure to safeguard electronic devices and prolong their lifespan.

    Remove batteries

    video games

It’s advisable to remove batteries from electronic devices when they are not in use. This is particularly important because batteries can degrade over time and leak battery acid, which has the potential to erode the battery compartments and harm the internal components of the device. This can result in malfunctioning or complete failure of the device.

By making it a habit to remove batteries when the device is not in use, you can effectively minimize the risk of such damage and extend the lifespan of your electronic devices.

Coil cables using the over-under method

Over time, electronic device cables can deteriorate, often due to how they are stored and handled. When cables are tightly wound in the same direction, the internal wires can become stressed and damaged, leading to potential malfunctions.

It’s best to use the over-under method when coiling cables to prevent wear and tangling. This method entails alternating between overhand and underhand loops, which helps distribute the stress on the cables more evenly and prevents them from tangling. Using this method makes the cables less likely to suffer from wear and tear, ensuring a longer lifespan for your electronic devices.

    Final thoughts

In the world of constantly evolving technology, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest gadgets and forget about the old electronic devices that hold sentimental value or serve as collector’s items. But as we hold onto these devices, we must also consider their proper storage in order to preserve their functionality and value.

By following the five tips outlined in this article – storing in a climate-controlled environment, avoiding dust exposure, using specialized cases or boxes, removing batteries, and coiling cables using the over-under method – we can ensure that our old electronic devices stand the test of time. So, remember to give them the care and attention they deserve, whether it’s a vintage game console or a retro camera.

  • 10 Fun And Educational Gift Ideas For Tech-Loving Kids

10 Fun And Educational Gift Ideas For Tech-Loving Kids

Your kids might look at their gifts as treats for being good all year but picking the right presents can help to set them on the right career path and prepare them for the rest of their lives. If your kids have a passion for technology, you’ll likely want to foster this interest but are also unsure where to begin with the perfect gift.

Well, look no further. Here is a list of some of the most varied and effective gifts for your tech-loving child, ranging from things they can use in their daily lives to courses that will help them build their skills. Of course, there are also a few fun things in there, but even these possess an educational twist—even if your kids don’t notice!

    Noise-Canceling Headphones

Whether your child is at school or home, noise-canceling headphones can make a huge difference. Not only are they excellent quality and can help them catch everything their teacher says, but they also provide studying benefits.

Noise-canceling headphones can improve focus at school or doing their homework as they won’t be able to hear many of the typical distractions. If your child struggles to focus normally, this could be the solution that transforms their experience and ensures they can reach their potential in the classroom and during exams or projects.

    Drones

It’s no secret that kids love cool stuff, and what’s cooler than flying a drone around a field or the neighborhood? You can check out a comparison of the best drones to get a better idea of which one to buy and open up a whole new world of excitement for them.

Drones are especially useful if your kid has shown an interest in film or TV, especially on the technology side of things. They can capture incredible shots and footage using a drone, which is perfect for helping them explore various mediums and styles that will expand their horizons. Plus, drones are fun by themselves, even if your child isn’t into film, so it’s a win either way.

    Smartwatch

Considering how busy kids are nowadays, a smartwatch is another great gift. They are more functional and versatile compared to traditional watches, and they come with a heap of useful features that can help your kids stay organized and stay in touch, even if they can’t use their phones.

Various smartwatches, such as the Samsung Galaxy or Apple Watch, are available. Some watches are more suited to fitness, such as Garmin. However, any smartwatch you choose will have a decent range of high-tech features, such as apps and social media, so they can catch up with friends, check your messages to them, and keep up to date with their calendars.

    Coding Courses

It’s not out of the realm of possibility to assume coding will be one of the most in-demand skills in the future. Some schools have already introduced coding courses for students so they have other skills besides the core subjects, which can make them more employable when they leave school.

One practical way to help your child hone their coding skills is to guide them to choose the right college. Which college to attend is one of the most crucial decisions your child will ever make in their educational journey, and this decision can impact their job prospects in the future. Therefore, as a parent, you can help your kids use online college search resources to get more in-depth information regarding available tech-oriented colleges in their region and the programs offered. Young students often feel pressure when making these decisions, so offering sound and well-informed decisions to help your child navigate their educational journey and professional career will prove beneficial.

If your child has shown an interest in tech, there are plenty of free or paid lessons you can give them for any upcoming occasion. This can give them the chance to learn from the pros and explore different programming languages. They can learn how to build websites or dig deep into other tricky but fascinating tech issues that will give them a newfound appreciation for the subject.

    Animation Programs

It’s no secret that kids love video games, so what if they were able to make their own? While they won’t be hitting the same heights as some of their favorite titles, like Minecraft or The Legend of Zelda, they can play around with textures and learn how to bring their imagination to life through a new medium.

Even if they never work for one of the big gaming companies, they can still find a way to express themselves and indulge in their creativity by releasing indie games, which are often more revered compared to the bigger titles. And even more importantly, they’ll have fun.

    Laptop or Tablet

Kids used to get by fine using handwritten notes in school, but times have changed, and they may need a device to take notes during their classes. At the very least, they will need their laptop or tablet to do their homework.

Thankfully, you don’t need to drop thousands on the best gaming laptop (despite what they might think). Most kids can get by fine with Chromebooks that possess all the programs and usability they need. However, because it uses a different operating system to what they are used to, there might be a learning curve and some apps might not be compatible, so check this before purchasing a laptop.

    Tech Books

As much as your kids can learn all about tech online, there’s often no substitute for a book. It might seem a little strange to them, but this gives them the chance to read more about their favorite developers or tech CEOs and find out information they won’t find on Wikipedia.

From biographies to historical deep-dives, there is a book for every tech-loving child. Just be prepared for them to tell you everything they find out. But you might not know it either, so you’ll learn something too.

    Music Subscription

Technology is about so much more than creating websites or designing apps. Many people get into tech through music when they use music-making programs to create beats and soundtracks.

A music subscription (such as Spotify) could be a great chance to help your child expand their musical horizon and learn more about the music they love. They can use this to listen to all the intricacies of their favorite artists and try to replicate their styles on music-making programs. Some are free (like Cakewalk), but others may cost. It is probably best to stick with the free versions for now until they prove it’s something that will stick.

    Telescope

If your child always seems to have their head in the clouds, you can buy them a telescope to show them what’s out there beyond what they can typically see. Modern telescopes come with a wide range of great features, including photography software that can snap images directly from the telescope to their phones.

This is a fantastic way to help them develop a passion for science and increase their curiosity about what is out there beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. In the right conditions, they can see a range of planets in real life, which is one of the most exciting things for a child. Don’t be surprised if they want to dedicate their life to becoming a NASA engineer afterward, though!

    Something For Fun

Of course, you might just want to get your kid something fun. Game consoles or music players are always a great gift, and they will use it. You can also buy them a game if they already have a console, so they can spend their free time (after they’ve done their homework) battling bosses and reaching 100% completion.

This can remind them that, while tech can seem overwhelming, it’s also supposed to be fun, and it can still have the same effect and inspire their interest in all things electronic.

    Techy

Techy kids are surprisingly easy to shop for, but even this can feel a little intimidating when you see how much tech stuff there is. Hopefully, this list gives you some inspiration and advice to help you choose the right gift for your tech-loving child, and they will begin their plan to make the world a better place as soon as they open their gifts

  • Protect Your Apple® iPad® 10.2″ (7th Gen 2019) with a SaharaCase

    Protect Your Apple® iPad® 10.2″ (7th Gen 2019) with a SaharaCase

This post was created in partnership with SaharaCase. I was not financially compensated for this post but did receive a sample for review purposes. As always, all opinions are entirely my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that support me!
    SaharaCase

We love Apple products in our house but the owner of our only iPad is a ten-year-old boy. He’s a boy and ten so that means if we want his iPad to last longer than a day a high-quality case is a must. I protect any device meant for our boys from day one, otherwise, I might as well just throw it in the trash. Been there. Done that. Recently, we’ve been testing out a SaharaCase Folio Case (in teal and black) with our son’s iPad, and here’s what we found.

    First A Little About SaharaCase

    Protect Your Apple® iPad® 10.2" (7th Gen 2019) with a SaharaCase

SaharaCase makes extremely protective cases in a slim package. No longer does thin mean fragile. Their cases are designed to shield the most vulnerable parts from breakage, including the screen.

[click_to_tweet tweet=”Protect your iPad from accidental dings and the inevitable breaks kids WILL cause with a Sahara Case! @SaharaCase #ipadcase #ipadaccessories ” quote=”Protect your iPad from accidental dings and the inevitable breaks kids WILL cause with a Sahara Case! “]

    Easy to Use

Let’s face it — my son can be a pig at times. His iPad gets all gunked up and we have to remove his case often to clean it.

Some cases make this almost impossible.

Sure, they may protect your device well but they hold your iPad hostage if you ever want to clean it or change cases. It’s a pain.

The SaharaCase folio case couldn’t be easier to use. The iPad presses easily into the form-fitting case and can be removed just as easily too making cleanup a breeze.

    Great Protection

    SaharaCase

This folio case is great at absorbing shock damage with its dual-layer construction and raised edges.

It could take a tumble down the stairs and come out shining like new at the end (which ours probably has).

    SaharaCase

    SaharaCase

All of the cutouts (which match perfectly by the way) including the camera are raised too!

    Great Extra Features

My son’s favorite features are the ‘wake-sleep function’ and the ‘tri-fold stand’.

Opening the SaharaCase folio case automatically wakes up your iPad and closing it (with its magnetic closure) puts it to sleep.

He thinks this is so cool and I love that it helps extend his battery life. Without this feature, his screen undoubtedly would be left on and it would die faster.

    SaharaCase

Anyone else’s kid into Roblox? Well, my son loves watching Roblox and other video game channels on Youtube (exciting I know).

This case allows him to watch his videos practically anywhere with hands-free viewing.

    SaharaCase

However, I prefer when he folds it down into a typing stand and does school work on it but that’s just me.

Overall, it’s a great sleek case that will do your iPad justice. The black/gray and teal/gray colors work for males or females and it also has a spot to secure your Apple pencil.

Best Buy also has a pink and blue version too if those colors suit you better.

My only wish is that they bundled this case with a glass screen protector. My boys are great at cracking screens somehow. So just save yourself the headache and buy some when you purchase this folio case or go for one of their other cases that have a built-in screen protector.

We opted for a glass screen protector and our iPad still fit perfectly snug into the folio case and it gave us more peace of mind.

Are you ready to try this awesome SaharaCase folio case?

Great! Head to Best Buy and check it out today!!
How do you keep your iPad safe?
